What's Inside This Guide

Where do I start? First questions to ask.
01
Quick Usability Check
Is it usable within 24 hours? If yes, donate or sell immediately. This is your first and best option for giving items a second life while helping your community.
02
Assess Transportation Needs
Too bulky for you to move safely? Schedule a pickup service. Many NYC donation centers offer free pickup for large items, saving you time and effort.
03
Consider Quick Repairs
Needs a simple fix? Repair first, then donate. A small investment in repairs can transform trash into treasure for someone else.
04
Explore Recycling Options
Not reusable or permanently broken? Research responsible recycling options. NYC has numerous specialized programs for different materials.
05
Handle Special Materials
Hazardous materials, e-waste, or batteries? Use DSNY's specialized disposal programs. Never put these items in regular trash – it's illegal and dangerous.
